Destination description: Fort Charles is the oldest and most well-preserved fort in Jamaica, dating back to the 17th century. It was built by the English to defend their newly acquired colony from the Spanish and the pirates.

It is located in Port Royal, a historic town that was once known as the “wickedest city in the world” for its wealth, debauchery, and piracy. Fort Charles offers visitors a glimpse into the fascinating history and culture of Jamaica, as well as a stunning view of the Caribbean Sea and the Kingston Harbour. You can explore the fort’s rooms, walls, and cannons, and learn about its role in various battles, earthquakes, and hurricanes.

You can also visit the museum inside the fort, which displays exhibits and memorabilia related to the Jamaican military, maritime, and colonial history. One of the highlights of the fort is the Giddy House, a former artillery storehouse that tilted after an earthquake in 1907, creating a dizzying effect for anyone who enters it.
